Preparing the ground
As with most things effort put into preparation is well rewarded. This is particularly so with turf.
Stage 1
If the existing lawn is full of weed it is ideal to spray off the lawn using a systemic herbicide such as roundup and leave for approximatley 2 weeks for all the grasses weeds etc to be eradicated, then clear the site of any existing grass growth, weeds or other extraneous objects.
Stage 2
Soil idealy be turned over to a depth of approximatley 9 inches by either digging over the area or using a rotavator. Avoid bringing sub soil to the surface and ensure that there is a minimum of 6 inches of decent soil on which to lay your turf.
Stage 3
For best results a general purpose fertiliser should be raked into the prepared surface (follow manufacturer’s guidelines) After raking to achieve the required level the ground should be lightly rolled or firmed by foot. On no account should the soil be over compacted. Once you have a smooth and firm surface than you are ready to lay your turf.
Laying the turf
Turf should be laid as soon after delivery as possible. the sooner it is laid the faster it will re-establish, turf should not be left in a roll especially in warm weather conditions.
Stage 1
If the conditions are very dry it is essential to pre-water your site; be careful not to make the ground to wet.
Stage 2
Start by laying a single row along the longest stretch then work across the lawn, staggering the joints in each row to create the effect of brickwork.
Stage 3
Place a board on the newly laid turf whilst working on the next row as walking on the new turf is not recommended.
Stage 4
Never stretch or bend the turf to fill in gaps as this may cause shrinkage later on instead lightly butt up the turf by gently pushing the turf together.
